Introducing Andrew Viney Principal Coach / Instructor for Advanced Tactical Self-Defence.
Working with a large range of Government and private clients for many years Andrew also has extensive experience in the security industry. It is within the security industry that he has put many of the techniques that he teaches into practice.
Prior to security work Andrew worked in heavy industry dealing with Unions, employees and Managers to collaborate on various issues in order to reach critical agreements.
Andrew currently teaches de-escalation techniques, and is the founder/Principal of ATSD (Advanced Tactical Self-Defence) a Tasmanian based self-defence school.
To add to his overall experience he started his Martial Arts journey at the age of 11 and throughout his life has trained in Judo, Karate, boxing, Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga.
ATSD specialises in reality based self-defence training for use in the ‘real world’.

“When I look back over my life I can see that I always worked hard to avoid conflict.
I suppose it’s because of my personality type. I’m quite introverted and could be classed as an ‘avoider’.
I always seek to smooth over conflict. My lifelong involvement in the fighting arts, and over recent years concentrating on self-defence has come from a belief of never wanting to be the victim in a violent confrontation, or not standing by while another person is bullied.
This desire to avoid conflict found me not backing down from verbal aggression, but seeking to resolve the situation peacefully without resorting to violence. ‘Winging’ it to de-escalate I guess.
I got better with time and experience, but certainly had times that on reflection I thought “I probably could have handled that differently”. I learned from experience. Working in the security industry has certainly given me plenty of opportunities to practice ‘de-escalation’.
As well as continually studying self-defence, I developed an interest in de-escalation techniques, by absorbing all the material I could from people who had real life experience in this area.
This has given me a desire to help others to hopefully avoid some of what I have had to go through.
I have found that working with people on how to de-escalate an agitated person has helped many feel more confidence when faced with difficult client / people situations.”
